Rectangular Chandelier

Rectangular Chandelier

A long table needs a long fixture. Rectangular and linear chandeliers spread light evenly down a table instead of pooling it in the middle, which is why they have become the default over dining tables and kitchen islands. For every other silhouette, see all chandeliers.

Sizing over a table or island

Sizing over a rectangular dining table

Aim for a fixture around half to two thirds of the table length, centred on the table rather than on the room, and hung 30 to 36 inches above the surface. Over an island, hang a little higher - 32 to 40 inches - so it clears sightlines across the counter.

Rectangular or linear?

Rectangular designs carry a frame or a full crystal body and read more formal. Linear designs are a single bar of lights or drops and read more contemporary. Both work over the same table; the difference is how much presence you want above it.

Materials

Hand-blown glass, K9 crystal and natural rock crystal on brass, bronze and nickel frames. For crystal-led pieces see crystal chandeliers, for metal-forward versions see brass chandeliers, and see kitchen island lighting for island-specific sizes.
