How to Choose the Right Size

A simple guide to finding the perfect fit for your space.

Choosing the right size lighting isn't just about looks — it's about proportion, function, and how the light fills your space. Here's how to get it right.

The Right Fit for Your Room

Chandeliers

A chandelier should feel balanced — not too small, not too overwhelming.

  • The formula: Add your room's width and length in feet. The sum in inches is your ideal chandelier diameter.
  • Example: A 14ft × 16ft room = 30ft → 30 inches is your ideal diameter.
  • Hanging height: Hang your chandelier 30–36 inches above a dining table. For open spaces, the bottom should be at least 7 feet from the floor.

Tip: For rooms with ceilings over 9 feet, add 3 inches to the diameter for every additional foot of ceiling height.

Size & Placement

Pendants

Pendants are versatile — but size and spacing matter.

  • Over an island or table: Choose a pendant that's about 1/2 to 3/4 the width of the surface below it. For a 36-inch wide table, a 18–24 inch pendant works well.
  • Spacing: Hang pendants 28–34 inches apart for a balanced look. For multiple pendants, divide the surface length by the number of pendants to find the right spacing.
  • Height: Bottom of the pendant should hang 30–36 inches above the surface.

Height & Placement

Wall Sconces

Sconces are all about height and spacing.

  • Height: Install sconces 60–66 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture. This puts them at comfortable eye level.
  • Spacing: Place sconces 6–8 feet apart in hallways, or on either side of a mirror or artwork, spaced about 36–40 inches apart.

Tip: In bathrooms, place sconces at eye level (around 60 inches) on either side of the mirror for the most flattering light.

Low Ceilings

Flush Mounts & Semi-Flush

For rooms with lower ceilings, flush and semi-flush mounts are your best option.

  • Ceiling height: For ceilings under 8 feet, choose a flush mount that sits close to the ceiling. Semi-flush mounts work well for 8–9 foot ceilings.
  • Size: For a 10ft × 12ft room, look for a flush mount around 16–24 inches in diameter.
